Village, Day 3: The Birth of the Peeps!
The morning started with the discovery of the Village Business Center; a central location for filing important paperwork, finding important forms and keeping abreast of the news of the day. And what is the news of the day? Village Job Applications are out! Any Villagers interested in a "regular job" may apply, although of course some will prefer to start their own businesses. The job openings posted this week are Bank Manager, Trading Post Manager, Town Crier, Meeting Moderator and Meeting Secretary. There was a flurry of excitement as Villagers grabbed up applications and started filling them out. "What? There are two sides of the application? Quick - I need mine back!" "Hey - what's a reference?", "I'm applying for TWO jobs - AND I'm going to start my own business too..." And so it begins, Real Life on a Small Scale...
Once the hubbub at the Business Center died down we turned our attention to Peep Making - definitely the highlight of the day! Everyone was so excited to finish making their peeps and to begin creating their characters. We referred back to the Origin Cards and our "WHAT WE KNOW/ WHAT WE WANT TO KNOW" posters to determine professions and lifestyles, and to the "What did people look like" slideshow to determine skin tones, hair, and clothing, as well as the sketches that students made over the week of what their peep's clothing would look like. While making clothing, in addition to learning how to make an historically appropriate clothing, we learned the perils of using Fabric Scissors to cut paper (the scissors will become dull!! Oh no! Summer will get really mad! Oh NO! One might have to pay a fine! Ack!). We also took the opportunity to have a formal lesson in hot glue gun safety had more practice with the glue guns, and learned to rules of using the toaster oven to bake clay items safely. Once the Peeps are "born" they are eager to join society and to find their own unique place in the scheme of things. To that end we set the stage for the formal introduction of our Peeps. Each Peep had a turn at the stage to introduce themselves, talk about their past, their interests and their plans for the future. Each peep was interviewed by Habiba Masika, Cheryl's Peep, and then the crowd was able to ask questions, such as, "if you're from Corsica, why in the world do you sound like an Australian? And "Was Australia even a thing back then?" "Your hair is SO long! Are you related to Rapunzel?" " How did you grow that fantastic mustache at the age of 15?" We also heard about traders and the wares they'll be sharing with us, trades people and their many skills and, I'm happy to report, we have an engineer among the Peeps! Aqueducts and various weapons of defense are in our future! As each Peep left the stage they made a stop at the photo booth and posed for their Official Portrait. Birth Certificates will be issued in the near future, as each new citizen signs in at the Village Registry Office. How will the Peeps change over the course of the Game? How will the Gigantors change as they progress? Which Peep will be the first to lose its head? Stay tuned for the answers to these questions and more!
